Biography

Ilham Ahmad is a Syrian Kurdish politician who serves as co-chair of the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC), the political wing of the AANES (Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria), also known as Rojava. She has been one of the most internationally visible faces of the Kurdish-led political project in northeastern Syria, advocating for the AANES's political recognition, opposing the Turkish military offensive of 2019, and lobbying Western governments — particularly the United States — to maintain their military presence and political support for northeastern Syria. She has been particularly vocal on the issue of the tens of thousands of ISIS detainees and their families held in AANES-controlled prisons and camps, including the Al-Hol camp, calling for international burden-sharing and repatriation of foreign fighters.
