Biography

Jamal Maarouf was a Syrian rebel commander who rose to lead the Syrian Martyrs' Brigade and later the Syrian Revolutionary Front (SRF), one of the largest FSA-affiliated coalitions in northwestern Syria. He became a prominent figure in Western and Gulf-backed armed opposition networks and was presented at various points as a moderate rebel alternative. However, his forces were known for looting, extortion, and armed criminality, and journalists on the ground reported extensively on the SRF's corruption. His coalition was comprehensively defeated by Jabhat al-Nusra in November 2014 — an event that effectively ended the FSA's presence as an independent force in Idlib and northern Hama. Maarouf fled to Turkey. His trajectory illustrates the dysfunction and eventual collapse of the Western-backed 'moderate rebel' project in northwestern Syria.
