Jamil Hassan: The Air Force Intelligence Chief Germany Wants to Arrest

Air Force Intelligence has historically been Syria's most feared security service — operating outside even the thin accountability structures of other agencies. Hassan's command during the civil war coincided with a massive expansion of detentions, torture, and killings in its facilities. Biography

Jamil Hassan is the head of Syrian Air Force Intelligence (the Idarat al-Mukhabarat al-Jawwiyya) — one of the four parallel intelligence agencies and historically Syria's most feared. Under his leadership during the civil war, Air Force Intelligence's detention facilities, including the notorious Branch 235 (Palestine Branch), became sites of systematic torture and mass death. A German federal court issued an arrest warrant for him in 2018 on charges of crimes against humanity. He is one of the highest-ranking Syrian officials to have an international arrest warrant.
