Khaled Khoja
خالد خوجة
Biography
Khaled Khoja is a Syrian politician and physician who served as President of the Syrian National Coalition (SNC) from January 2015 to August 2015. A Turkmen Syrian with close ties to Turkey, he had previously been a member of the Syrian National Council, the earlier opposition body. His tenure as SNC president coincided with the period of maximum diplomatic activity around Syria — the Russian military intervention was imminent, the Vienna talks were beginning, and the opposition was attempting to present a unified negotiating face. He was known for his close relationship with the Turkish government and for advocacy work in international forums. His presidency illustrated the challenges facing the Syrian exile opposition: internal fragmentation, dependence on external patrons with sometimes conflicting agendas, and the difficulty of maintaining relevance as the military balance shifted against the opposition.
