Louai al-Miqdad

لؤي المقداد

Biography

Louai al-Miqdad was a senior spokesman for the Free Syrian Army (FSA) and the Supreme Military Council, serving as one of the primary public faces of the armed opposition from 2012 onward. A former Syrian military officer who defected, he represented the FSA in international media and diplomatic forums, advocating for weapons support and international intervention. He navigated the deeply fractured landscape of the armed opposition — the FSA was more a brand than a unified command — and worked to project the image of a coherent, moderate military organization at a time when the reality on the ground was deeply fragmented. His career illustrates both the aspirations and the fundamental weaknesses of the Western-backed opposition project.
