Biography

Louay Hussein is a Syrian writer, poet, and political activist who founded the 'Building the Syrian State' movement — one of the few opposition groupings that tried to operate openly inside Syria during the war. He was imprisoned by the Assad regime in 2014 for nearly two years for his political activities. His case drew international attention because of the extreme charges brought against him (communicating with a foreign country, weakening national sentiment) simply for his activism and public statements.
