Biography
Michel Aflaq was the Syrian-Christian philosopher and political activist who co-founded the Arab Ba'ath Party in 1947, providing the ideological foundation for decades of authoritarian rule in Syria and Iraq. His doctrine of pan-Arab nationalism — 'One Arab nation with an eternal mission' — became the official ideology of both Assad's Syria and Saddam Hussein's Iraq. He died in Paris in 1989; Saddam Hussein gave him a state funeral in Baghdad.
