military officer
Muhammad Umran
محمد عمران
Also known as: Abu Khalid
Biography
Muhammad Umran was an Alawite military officer and one of the founding members of the Ba'ath Military Committee, the secret organization that orchestrated the 1963 Ba'ath coup. He was one of the first senior Alawite officers in Syrian history and a key patron of both Salah Jadid and Hafez al-Assad. He was later marginalized by Jadid, exiled, and finally assassinated in Beirut in 1972 — almost certainly on Assad's orders. His murder illustrated that in Assad's Syria, even founding fathers were not safe.
