Muhammad Wael Hamzeh
محمد وائل حمزة
Biography
Dr. Muhammad Wael Hamzeh was a Syrian pediatrician who remained in East Aleppo throughout the siege and became known as one of the 'last doctors' — the small group of medical professionals who refused to leave the besieged half of the city as Assad and Russian forces tightened the blockade and intensified aerial bombardment in 2016. He worked at the M10 hospital and the Al-Quds hospital network, treating children in conditions of extreme shortage. He was killed on November 18, 2016, during an airstrike on a hospital in East Aleppo. His death, along with the deaths of other medical workers in Aleppo, was documented by the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS) and drew global attention to the systematic targeting of medical facilities — a pattern documented as deliberate policy by the UN Commission of Inquiry.
