Omar Aziz
عمر العزيز
Biography
Omar Aziz was a Syrian intellectual, anarchist thinker, and economist who became one of the revolution's most original theorists. In 2011 he drafted the foundational document for Local Coordination Committees (LCCs) — self-governing neighbourhood councils that functioned as an alternative grassroots civil administration during the uprising. Arrested by Syrian intelligence in November 2012 at the age of 63, he died in regime custody in February 2013 from heart failure, his ideas outliving him as a model for decentralised governance.
