رفعت الأسد

Also known as: Rif'at al-Assad • The Butcher of Hama • The Lion's Uncle

Biography

Rifaat al-Assad is the younger brother of Hafez al-Assad and commander of the Defense Companies — the elite praetorian force that carried out the 1982 Hama massacre, killing between 10,000 and 40,000 civilians. He briefly attempted to seize power when Hafez suffered a heart attack in 1983, was stripped of his command, and exiled to Europe where he built a network of corrupt businesses and properties. In 2020, a French court convicted him of money laundering and misappropriation of public funds and sentenced him to four years in prison.
