Sergei Lavrov
سيرغي لافروف
Biography
Sergei Lavrov has served as Russia's Foreign Minister since 2004, making him the longest-serving holder of the position in Russian history. He has been the primary diplomatic architect and international protector of the Assad regime throughout the Syrian conflict. He used Russia's UN Security Council veto power (along with China) repeatedly to block resolutions that would have imposed sanctions, authorized humanitarian access, or created accountability mechanisms for Assad's atrocities. He co-chaired the Astana peace process with his Iranian and Turkish counterparts — a framework that sidelined UN-led Geneva talks and cemented Russian influence in Syria's political future. He defended Russian military operations in Syria as counterterrorism and denied the documented targeting of hospitals, markets, and civilian infrastructure. He remains one of the most consequential enablers of the Syrian catastrophe.
